Ed has been shooting a project in Northern Europe recently and has had the pleasure of working with Rebekah Delsol who co-produced this important piece of theatre, Stop Search.

ABOUT STOP SEARCH

Black people are stopped and searched at 7 times the rate of white people – but what’s the story behind the statistics?
“Stop Search” is a new play exploring the issue of stop and search, focusing on the devastating impact the practice can have on individuals and their families. This play draws on the tradition of theatre driving social change such as “Sus” and “Cathy Come Home”, which both drew attention to pressing social justice issues in the 1970s and 80s, and resulted in legislative change. Produced by the Present Theatre company in association with StopWatch, the stop and search action group, the play is written by Dominic J. Taylor, who has previously worked at Brixton Prison and the Ministry of Justice. The production brings together a talented and experienced international creative team which has previously worked on productions including Warhorse, Evita, An Ideal Husband and It’s a Wonderful Life. The play also features music from talented young music producers Daniel Adeyemi and Mister Manga. Don’t miss out on this ground-breaking new production.

Please join me in celebrating and supporting my wife and colleague, Julie Winokur’s, most recent project: BRING IT TO THE TABLE. Julie and her Talking Eyes Media team have recently launched a new kickstarter site to get this platform for a robust, healthy, and intelligent political dialog, off the ground. As a husband and a board member of Talking Eyes Media, I am a proud comrade, but more importantly, as an American, I am grateful for the initiative to bridge the divide in this hyper-partisan and unproductive political climate. Please consider donating, there are varied tiers to accommodate your budget and as little as $10 will be an asset!

Bring it to the Table aims to bridge the political divide by allowing everyday citizens to share their beliefs, online and on camera. This project will develop into a participatory web platform, community engagement campaign, and webisode series focused on connecting Americans across the political divide. Bring it to the Table is a non-partisan project that grew out of our own frustration with a limited, hyper-partisan national dialogue. We are realistic about our goals, and realize that while we might not change people’s minds, we will at least elevate the conversation, begin to bridge a false divide, and start making politics an acceptable topic for dinner conversations again.

Here’s a suggested shoutout you can cut and paste for Twitter or Facebook. Please share!
Help @2thetable meet its $30k @kickstarter goal! “Bring it to the Table” says goodbye to ugly partisan politics.

Thank you,

Ed Kashi

“Liberty and Justice (For All): A Global Photo Mosaic is an exploration of the concepts of liberty and justice. The 68 contributors [including Ed], among them many of the world’s leading photojournalists, were asked to select one image that speaks to their sense of the theme and to pair that image with a brief narrative. There were no limitations on timeframe, subject matter or geography. Taken together, their words and images create a tapestry of the varied nature of liberty and justice that coalesce to explore something more fundamental: the pursuit and importance of truth.

This project was born from reflection on the lives of photojournalists Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, who were killed on April 20, 2011, while covering the war in Libya. They were among their field’s most accomplished leaders, men who pushed boundaries and reshaped the landscape of visual communication. They were trusted friends for many included here. For me, they were also mentors.”

Will Cohen from the Open Society Foundations interviewed Ed yesterday, focusing on the contextual misuse of photographs. Will cites a recent instance in the Swiss magazine Die Weltwoche that features a young Roma boy aiming a gun at the reader. The context in which this photo was shot and how it was being used to illustrate the magazine’s editorial piece “The Roma Are Coming” were two very different story lines. Read more about this liability for photojournalists in the Open Society Blog interview.
