The February 2009 issue of Smithsonian magazine features photographs taken by Ed that illustrate an article written by Matt Jenkins. The story documents the professional boat pilots who guide ships through the turgid waters where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. Known as “the bar” or “Graveyard of the Pacific”, this waterway is one of the most dangerous harbor mouths on the planet.
