Ed Kashi (VII), was the winner of one of the top international photographers awards at the 14th annual Pingyao International Photography Festival (PIP) where he exhibited a show curated from three recent bodies of work.
On September 20, VII photographer Sim Chi Yin hosted a “Meet VII” talk at the festival, which included a Q&A, a presentation of VII’s work and a video interview with Ed Kashi. On September 21, Chi Yin and Jim Dooley of Alexia Foundation gave a floor talk on Ed’s major solo exhibition at the festival.
PIP is China’s oldest and largest photo festival. “In its early years Pingyao focused on introducing its audience to the “masters” of photography showing works by the likes of Marc Riboud, Robert Frank, Josef Koudelka, Rene Burri, Sebastiao Salgado, Susan Meiselas, Martin Parr, Martine Franck and Eugene Richards.”
In L’Oeil de la Photographie Pingyao’s Festival Director, Zhang Guotian is quoted, “Now that this elder master generation has become well-known in China, we are including the ‘new masters,’ and they are bringing in fresh blood to this community with their unique languages, techniques, and interpretations.” Among these named “new masters” is photojournalist Ed Kashi.
