Anderson Ranch: Visual Storytelling & Documentary Photography Projects
with Ed Kashi & James Estrin
July 6 – 10, 2015

Join Ed Kashi (VII) and James Estrin (NY Times) for a workshop on storytelling through photography.  The digital age is giving documentary photographers and photojournalists extraordinary new ways to tell stories with greater authorship and control. This workshop focuses on how to create a personal documentary project and get it seen. The ultimate goal is to learn how to find a subject that speaks to a personal passion, document it in a compelling and unique visual style, and disseminate the work. The workshop addresses how to harness new technologies and forms of communication to be more effective storytellers. We will discuss iPhones and Instagram, social media, and transmedia. The focus includes how to develop an idea, get funding, get access, determine goals and disseminate artwork to create an impact.

Morning and afternoon shooting with mid-day editing and review sessions, group critiques of each student’s portfolio/essays, one on one sessions with the instructors which can be used to discuss personal projects, talk about career advice or the promoting and publishing of work.

Discussions and practical experience for richer storytelling, image editing and narrative development. Additional workshop topics include managing digital workflow, creating multimedia projects, developing a portfolio, social media, Instagram and multimedia storytelling.
