Congratulations to Angela Jimu, founding member of Zimbabwe Association of Female Photographers (ZAFP), for her recent recognition in the USAID Zimbabwe’s International Women’s Day photo contest! The competition called for images of the woman who inspires you the most.
Jimu’s winning image below depicts Gogo Muganiwa practicing urban agriculture on vacant land in her neighborhood of New Marlborough, north west of Harare. Muganiwa has been an urban farmer since 1972 and in times of drought, “she goes around distributing the produce to people in her community of New Marlborough; ensuring that all her ‘children’ get something.”
First place photographer Angela Jimu, describes the woman who has inspired her and the making of this beautiful photograph:
“The woman who most inspires me is my mother, also known as Gogo Muganiwa. She has raised 10 children through small-scale farming in New Marlborough. During difficult periods, she has fed her neighbors and made sure that everyone has enough to eat. Most people just call her “Gogo”, but I call her mother – my greatest inspiration.”
