Tomorrow, Nov 9th, the first installment of Noorderlicht’s traveling exhibition, The Sweet and Sour Story of Sugar, will open in Yogjakarta, Indonesia. Six photographers — James Whitlow Delano, Alejandro Chaskielberg, Francesco Zizoia, Carl de Keyzer, Tomasz Tomaszewski, along with Ed — participated in this epic journey to understand globalization by studying the history and dynamics of one commodity, sugar. The resulting photographs are paired with historical pictorial records from Suriname, Indonesia, Brazil and The Netherlands. Together these new and archival images present a comprehensive view of  trade, labour, changing markets, exploitation and migration.

Noorderlicht has felt the economic pinch as photography becomes an increasingly devalued medium. It had even been discussed that the Cultural Council of The Netherlands would cut their funding completely. In August of this year a letter with a financial pledge from the Secretary of State for Culture, Halbe Zijlstra, arrived just in time to salvage this esteemed photography institution. For that continued support we are all grateful.
