Madagascar: A Land Out of Balance illustrates the plight of the southeast coastal community of the Malagasy people as they find themselves struggling to cope with the dwindling forests, water resources and fisheries that have been their livelihood. In the face of diminishing arable land, Malagasy farmers are joining other newly conscripted farmers-turned-fishermen in numbers too great to operate in balance with the ocean’s limited supply. These destructive cycles continue to repeat themselves, sowing the seeds of desertification, receding oceans, and the enforced migration of communities into already overcrowded towns. First the earth, and then the sea – the people of Madagascar are running out of options.

Commissioned by the 2010 Prix Pictet Commission, and in conjunction with Azafady, a small grass-roots NGO.
