The men and boys ceremoniously beat their fists against their chests (matham/latmiya) and bloody themselves in a traditional flagellation riitual called zanjeer zani or zanjeer matam, which involves the use of a zanjeer (a chain with blades), to symbolize the suffering of Ali.
